This is because the flat reduces number of threads that the mounting screws will be able to engage, and thus could reduce the reliability of the mount.
The saddle has a keyhole slot that slides onto the nut and then a screw that goes thru the saddle and into the pin on the trigger assembly and a small screw goes on the right side of the trigger pin.
