In this game, you need to spend time in building your castle, training monsters, fighting with enemy monsters, and rescuing the princess. So, get ready for some fun-time! Medieval Siege. Find out about life in a castle in the Middle Ages and the weapons that were used in warfare at this time. You can even build your own virtual trebuchet and fire sandstone balls at a castle wall.

I found and played Comma Castle, an adventure game covering core elements of grammar and syntax for children aged 7-11+ (). Comma Castle is available to everyone, teaching children various literacy skills while remaining fun and interactive. Through this personal development activity I learnt that there is a variety of online games available to children to assist in teaching them not only valuable literacy skills but other skills such as numeracy and sequencing skills. I also learnt how the library can promote and provide access to free educational games to the families within their community and beyond.

“Young children are immersed in a technological culture from birth, both through informal home and community exposure and through quasi-educational situations” (Spatariu, Peach and Bell, 2012, p. Public libraries can give all children in their community access to online resources that they may not have access to at home. By giving access to online, educational games like Comma Castle the library can give children, including teenagers, access to fun, interactive games that assist in increasing their literacy skills on a platform they can connect to. This activity was relevant in showing what resources are available both inside and outside the library to help children improve their reading and comprehension skills as well as their general grammar. Children have access to, and learning, new technologies skills and educators need to learn these new technologies (Spatariu, Peach and Bell, 2012, p. The same is for information professionals.

Knowing what new technologies, phone and tablet apps and online games are available, librarians can assist parents and children explore technology both within the library and at home. It was also relevant because by taking the time to play and understand Comma Castle I am now able to appreciate online games more and assist users in choosing the right style of game and difficulty level for them. Grid Club is free and available to everyone and promoted on the Gold Coast Libraries website (City of Gold Coast, 2017). Grid Club has the potential to be promoted and accessed via other public library websites and even school libraries. The process of finding an online resource revealed gaps in my knowledge in regards to the vast variety of online educational games available to assist children not only with their literacy skills, but mathematics, art and general play. Billington (2016) states “more than ever before, children have access to a wide range of digital technologies, both at home and in the learning environment” (p. There are so many different games available which can be accessible by a lot of different ways through public libraries.

Each library can have their way of presenting technology as I saw in my local library and the Gold Coast Library. By visiting different public library websites and visiting their children’s zones within the libraries themselves, will fill the gaps in my knowledge on what new technology and online games public libraries can offer their patrons and the different ways the library can offer these technologies to them.
