Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Diskette Version 1.73

OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard. -OEM versions does not move directly from an older Windows operating system. There is nothing wrong to use it too, especially that all future versions of Windows will be full versions. For Hardware Maintenance Diskette, ver 1.75, on ThinkPad T42, for menu item 1. 'Set system identification' > 2. 'Read S/N data from EEPROM,' the only three serial numbers that appear are.

• Unzip the TP HMD. Use 'usbfmtpw.exe' to make a bootable HMD USB. If it says 'Error: Drive not found to format', then it's very likely it can't run on your OS (Windows 10 for instance).

Otherwise, you will see a format window. Make sure it's your flash drive. Don't worry about the size.

You can always format it in windows, and the flash drive will turn back to normal. • Boot your Thinkpad with the USB stick you just made. You might need to hit 'F12' to open the boot options to choose it. You will see a blue screen with some descriptions of the tool. • Choose option 1, '1. ' or something like that. I can't remember now, but it's pretty straightforward once you are at this step.

• Follow the instructions. It's pretty easy. You will need to input the Model Type and SN together, with '1S' at the beginning. Say, model type 1234CTO, SN 56789AB, you will need to input '1S1234CTO56789AB'. It may vary depending on your machine.

• Then simply reboot.

Bernard, Around the time floppies went out of style (I guess Apple 'led' the way on that move) IBM added USB booting to their BIOSs and every certified old fogies (blush) got one of these:. After I fiddled a bit with David's link I found version 1.78 at: and you will be thrilled to learn that it includes both the diskette creator and also a program to make a self-booting USB drive that works fine. I'm now hoping it can become the basis of a more generally useful self-booting USB for stuff like Ultimate Boot CD etc. Please let's share.
